Buona Pasqua a tutti! Easter celebrations in Florence, Italy! Easter is a big celebration in Italy. I just want to talk to you about the quirkiest and most different customs across my beautiful country. Learn italian in Manchester or Cheshire and I’ll tell you more about our traditions!!
Let’s start with Florence and the unique custom of the Scoppio del Carro is observed in which a holy fire is lit from stone shards from the Holy Sepulchre are used to light a fire during the singing of the Gloria of the Easter Sunday mass, which is used to ignite a rocket in the form of a dove, representing peace and the holy spirit, which following a wire in turn lights a cart containing pyrotechnics in the small square before the Cathedral.
In Sardinia, we recall the traditional Eastern celebration of Oliena (Nuoro), where, on Eastern Sunday, people celebrate S’Incontru (the meet). Two processions (the participants are dressed with typical costumes), the one carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary and the second carrying a statue of Jesus Christ, meet after a long walk through the village’s streets. The curious thing is that, people who don’t participate to the processions are in their balconies and celebrate by shooting in the air, announcing the resurrection.
Of course you will also find contests for which town is making the biggest Easter chocolate egg, what do you think of this one??
