Learn Italian Manchester useful tip: Car hire in Italy

Ciao a tutti, most of my students will be travelling to Italy at some point. I’m writing the content of my Italian lesson for my Wednesday evening class in Didsbury Manchester and thought I’d share useful information about renting a car in Italy:

Car Rental in Italy: Requirements – Requisiti

To drive a car in Italy you must be at least 21 years. You must have a driving license for at least one year. Drivers under 25 may incur a surcharge for young drivers. Seat belts are compulsory and children under 12 years must use a special support. The maximum alcohol limit for driving is 0.5.

Speed Limits – Limiti di velocita’

The speed limits in Italy are the following

• City 50 km / h
• A roads 110 km / h
• Highway 130 km / h
Driving on the road – Guidare sulla strada
You’ll drive on the right and the middle lane of a three-lane carriage is used to overtake. If you are stopped for a traffic violation, the police are allowed to take the money for the fine on the spot.

Petrol Stations – Benzinaio
Petrol stations are open from 7 am to 12.30 pm and from 15.30 to 19.00 also in major cities like Rome, Venice, Milan. Most dealers are closed on Sundays. On the highway, there are petrol stations open 24 hours.

Tolls – Pedaggi

In the UK we pay road tax once a year or every 6 months. In Italy you pay everytime you get on the motorway. If you don’t need to, then you never pay. The toll varies depending on the routes and must be paid directly to the toll booth.
Parking – Parcheggi

It is possible to park only on the right side of the road. The parking spaces delimited by blue lines are extra. The parking spaces delimited by white stripes are free to expose the disc.

Car Insurance – Assicurazione Auto

First check what insurance is provided with the rental. Whenever I have rented in Europe, the quoted price has included comprehensive insurance but with an excess (deductible) of maybe €2000. It is possible to buy extra insurance to reduce the excess to zero when you pick up the car, but this is expensive. Sometimes if you own a  Visa card they’ll provide travel insurance that covers the excess on a rented car.

A fully comprehensive insurance in Italy is called Kasko.
